EPA is granting California’s waiver request enabling the state to enforce its greenhouse gas emissions standards for new motor vehicles, beginning with the current model year. Using the law and science as its guide, EPA has taken this action to tackle air pollution and protect human health.

The Midwestern Greenhouse Gas Reduction Accord Advisory Group has finalized their recommendations.  The governors are now reviewing the recommendations to offer their input on next steps to be taken in the region and at the federal level.  The recommendations are from the advisory group only, and have not been endorsed or approved by individual Governors.  Governor’s views may vary on individual aspects of the recommendations.  Read more

March 24, 2009 - The U.S. Secretary of Transportation today announced the availability of $100 million in federal funding under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, 2009 for the Transit Investments for Greenhouse Gas and Energy Reduction grant program.

Projects will compete for a portion of the funds on the basis of how much their proposed capital investment is expected to reduce either energy consumption or greenhouse gases, or both.  Read more

 

The Environmental Council of the States (ECOS) has released a report that summarizes the work to-date of the three regional climate initiatives–the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, the Western Climate Initiative and Midwestern Greenhouse Gas Reduction Accord.   Read more

Governor Jim Doyle yesterday said that the Midwest Governors Accord is ready to roll out its own carbon cap and trade system as part of the Midwestern Greenhouse Gas Reduction Accord.

He said the Governors prepare a national cap and trading system, but they are still prepared for the unveiling this fall if progress is not made on the national level.  Read more

The province of Manitoba has recently partnered with the Canadian Standards Association and the Canadian Climate Exchange to create www.GreenRegistry.org. The site is engineered to provide organizations and individuals with the information, guidance and tools needed to respond to climate change.

The Canadian province has set into motion a plethora of initiatives with businesses and communities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. These activities include devoting resources toward knowledge, promoting technology development and innovation, and encouraging action in all sectors of the economy.
